Welcome to the Dubois Spencer Counties Publishing website, featuring the Ferdinand News and Spencer County Leader.

The Ferdinand News was founded in 1906 by a group of progressive businessmen living in Ferdinand, Indiana, who believed that to thrive, a community needed a voice. Within months, the pressman, Henry Haake, bought the newspaper and continued its publication until his death in 1944. With his sons serving in the military overseas during World War II, his daughter served as editor and publisher until 1946, when her brothers, Oscar and J. Roy Haake, took over. They ran the operation from that day forward, adding the Dale News in 1960.

In 1990, when the brothers were 74 and 69 respectively, they sold both newspapers to a brother and sister and their spouses, Richard and Kathy Tretter and Miriam and Paul Ash. The foursome incorporated under the name Dubois Spencer Counties Publishing Co. Inc. In 1997, due to greatly expanded coverage in Spencer County, the Dale News was renamed the Spencer County Leader.

Both newspapers have won scads of state and some national awards, primarily for solid writing in all areas, including features, sports, government, business and local coverage. Both papers focus heavily on their primary coverage areas — the Ferdinand News being Dubois County and the Southeast School District and the Leader on all of Spencer County.

This website is the latest endeavor.
